The second period saw the wealth of Mahayana, the upward thrust of its major schools of Madhyamika and Yogacara, and their spread to Central Pacific Rim and China where Mahayana did very nicely and spread further to other northeastern nations. In the third period, the Mahayana degenerated into an unhealthy type of Tantra and lost ground in most parts of India till Buddhism was brought to a close in its homeland by the Turkish invaders.
